Sharp Clunk Over Bumps
Single metallic clunk when a tire crosses a seam or speed bump. Usually a worn sway-bar end link or a loose ball joint. Cheap to fix when caught early.
Most suspension noise is one of six parts (sway-bar links, ball joints, control arm bushings, struts, end mounts, or the exhaust pretending to be suspension). We find the source on the lift, not by guessing which part to throw at it.
The character of the sound matters. A rattle is not a clunk and a squeak is not a knock. Here is what we usually find behind each one.
Single metallic clunk when a tire crosses a seam or speed bump. Usually a worn sway-bar end link or a loose ball joint. Cheap to fix when caught early.
Rattle that disappears above 30 mph. Sway-bar bushing, loose heat shield, or a worn exhaust hanger letting the pipe tap the chassis.
Heavy thud as you slow into a stop, or a clunk when you let off the brake. Worn control arm bushing, strut mount, or strut bearing on the side that thuds.
Dry rubber against metal. Old sway-bar bushings or worn control arm bushings that have lost their lubrication and started to bind.
Click as you turn lock to lock, especially in a parking lot. Outer tie rod, ball joint, or strut bearing. On front-wheel-drive cars, sometimes a failing CV joint.
Rhythmic knock that speeds up with the wheel. Cupped tires from worn dampers, or a separated belt inside a tire. Both are dangerous, both need a lift inspection.
Noise diagnosis is the hardest part of suspension work. Wrong guess wastes your money. Here is the order we run it.
We drive your car on the stretch of W Gate City Blvd where the noise shows up, with you in the passenger seat pointing out when it happens. Half the diagnosis is hearing what the owner hears.
On the lift with the wheels hanging, we shake every joint, pry every bushing, twist every link. Worn parts show movement that solid parts do not.
Drive-on lift with the wheels loaded. Some noises only show up under weight. We bounce each corner and listen with a stethoscope on the strut mount and the joints.
Lock to lock with one of us turning the wheel and one underneath. Tie rod ends, strut bearings, and ball joints all show themselves here.
Heat shields, exhaust hangers, and skid plates pretend to be suspension noise constantly. A rubber mallet on each one quickly rules them in or out.
We tell you which exact joint or bushing is bad, how urgent it is, and what it costs. If we cannot pin down the source, we say that too. We do not throw parts at it on your dime.
Most noise diagnoses take 30 to 60 minutes on the lift. Free if we end up doing the repair. Walk in any business day or call to schedule.
Diagnosis points to the repair. These pages cover the most common suspension fixes that follow.
Damper replacement, in pairs, with alignment after the fronts. The fix for bouncy ride, nose-dive, and cupped tires.
Pressed-in joints, fresh hardware, torque to spec. The fix for clunks, wander, and steering vibration.
Every suspension service we offer plus our inspection process and the full warranty details.
If the noise is only when braking, the rotors and pads might be the real source. We check both.
Bring it in. We ride with you on a known stretch, put it on the lift, and tell you exactly what is making the noise before we quote a part.
